Simba atomise Jwaneng Galaxy (6-0)
The Simba from Tanzania had their fate in their own hands to qualify for the CAF Champions League quarter-finals. They needed a win to secure their qualification. They left no room for doubt at home against Jwaneng Galaxy from Botswana, who had nothing to play for. The Tanzanians defeated them 6-0 to finish 2nd in the group with 9 points, behind ASEC, who secured 1st place with 11 points. ASEC suffered a defeat against Wydad (1-0). Wydad, in turn, finished 3rd, level on points with Simba (9 points). They were eliminated due to Simba’s advantage in their direct encounters. Jwaneng Galaxy finished last in the group with 4 points.
As for the match between Simba and Jwaneng, the Tanzanians launched a relentless attack on their opponents’ goal right from the start, scoring their first goal in the 7th minute through Saidi Ntibazoninka. Pa Oumar Job (14th) and Kibu Denis (22nd) added to the tally. In the second half, Simba controlled the game and added more goals, with Clatous Chama scoring in the 76th minute, and Ladaki Chasambi (86th) and Fabrice Ngoma (89th) sealing the victory in the closing stages. The victory was well-deserved!
Wydad Misses Out on Quarter-Finals Despite Victory against ASEC (1-0)
For Wydad to qualify for the quarter-finals, they had to win against ASEC, who were already guaranteed top spot in the group, and also hope for a negative result for Simba. The Wydad players showed great determination from the start of the match and were rewarded for their initiative with a home goal scored by Montasser Lahtimi in the 18th minute. The score at half-time was 1-0, a deserved advantage. The Moroccans were more proactive, attempting 8 shots, 3 of which were on target. ASEC only had 2 shots, with 1 on target during the first 45 minutes. Possession was fairly equal between the two teams.
The second half did not see any major changes, although the game became more balanced with ASEC dominating but failing to find the back of the net. This scenario resulted in Wydad’s elimination at the group stage. At the final whistle, Wydad had 12 shots, 3 on target, and 45% possession, while ASEC had 11 shots, 6 on target, and 55% possession.
