Mouctar Diakhaby’s Career in Jeopardy After Severe Knee Injury

Mouctar Diakhaby sustained a severe knee injury during the 2-2 draw against Real Madrid on Saturday, March 2. The Guinean defender’s future in football is uncertain, according to renowned orthopedic surgeon Enrique Gastald.

‘It’s a very rare injury. It’s the most serious injury a football player can have in the knee. He probably tore four or five ligaments. It’s a wild injury. With this type of injury, the first thing I have to check is that the patient can walk and that there are no further issues (…) And we’re not talking about a recovery time of less than 9 or 12 months,’ explained Gastald on Cadena SER radio.

He added, ‘We need to study the injuries in depth and quantify them. We need to see which ligaments are affected and make sure there are no further complications. When the knee dislocates, the bone comes out of its place. This means tearing the ligaments. Once they are torn, we need to rule out the possibility of a vascular injury because when the bone comes out, it can tear the popliteal artery.’
