The renowned Moroccan athlete, Hicham El Guerrouj, will be receiving the prestigious title of Doctor Honoris Causa from Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France on April 12, 2024. This honorary degree is awarded to individuals who have made a significant impact in their respective fields, including sports, arts, sciences, and literature.
Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France, also known as Valenciennes University, has chosen to honor five exceptional individuals from Africa this year, one of them being the native of Berkane.
Hicham El Guerrouj is being recognized for his remarkable career achievements. He is considered the greatest Moroccan athlete of all time in terms of titles. As a specialist in the 1500m and to a lesser extent the 5000m, he holds multiple world records. He is a four-time World Champion and a two-time Olympic Champion at the Athens Olympics (2004). For a long period, he reigned over the world of athletics.
