Chebet and Aregawi Triumph at Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza

The world cross-country champion, Beatrice Chebet, and the silver medalist, Berihu Aregawi, lived up to expectations at the Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza, a gold meeting of the World Athletics Cross Country Tour in Elgoibar, Spain, on Sunday, January 7.

In challenging weather conditions, Chebet, the new world record holder in the 5 km, took the lead in the 7.62 km women’s race right from the start, covering the first lap in 1 minute and 18 seconds. The Kenyan progressively increased her speed throughout the race and crossed the finish line in 26 minutes and 8 seconds, securing her first victory in the Spanish city. She was followed closely by her compatriots Edinah Jebitok (26 minutes and 10 seconds) and Grace Nawowuna (26 minutes and 25 seconds).

« It was tough as the rain started just before the race, but I’m pleased with my performance in Spain as I achieved a world record and my first victory in such a prestigious race, » said Chebet, who will compete in Eldoret on February 3 before focusing on defending her cross-country world title in Belgrade.

Berihu Aregawi emerged as the winner of the men’s race. The Ethiopian completed the 9.7 km course in 30 minutes and 30 seconds. Burundian athlete Rodrigue Kwizera finished second in 30 minutes and 34 seconds. Olympic 3000m steeplechase champion Soufiane El Bakkali settled for third place with a time of 30 minutes and 36 seconds.
