After his impressive performance in the World Cup with Morocco, Azzedine Ounahi joined Olympique de Marseille in January 2023. However, he struggled to replicate his previous success. Speaking to RMC Sports, the Moroccan midfielder shared his difficulties during his early days at the club.
« I’m very hard on myself. When I’m not doing well, I know it. I have someone I work with before and after matches. As soon as he notices a drop in my performances, he talks to me directly. I could feel that I wasn’t myself, that I wasn’t the ‘real Ounahi’. I wasn’t giving 100%, and it was tough to accept. But that’s life. Sometimes you have to accept it and move on, and that’s what I did, » he confessed.
Despite the challenges, Ounahi seems to have regained his form this season, thanks to the work he has put into himself. « Now, I’m working harder, and I’ve also hired a fitness trainer who helps me with extra sessions. I’m more focused than before, which allows me to find my rhythm and play like the Ounahi from the World Cup. The series of matches I’ve played with Marseille will benefit me for the African Cup of Nations, and I’ll be fully prepared at 100%, » he added. Ounahi has been selected to represent Morocco in the CAN 2023.
